Smoothie Winner and Sunday Morning Pancakes

Hang tight...we'll get to the pancakes don't worry. But first, I'd like to say congrats to Rachel for posting her smoothie on Instagram for the contest. If you missed the recipes you'll definitely want to check them out here. They are super yummy and perfect for this time of year. Goodies coming your way Rachel!!!

On to pancakes...

It's so easy to let breakfast fall low on your priorities, but taking just a few minutes to eat a healthy, protein packed breakfast can really make an impact on the rest of your day. Breakfast is probably my favorite meal of the day. Most of the time I keep it simple with eggs or oatmeal, but this time of year I am a huge fan of pancakes. Why? Because who doesn't love a good, healthy pancake with lots of fun toppings. I look forward to the weekends when I have a little bit more time on my hands to prep a large breakfast, which recently has been these delicious pancakes by Nut Butter Runner

Sunday Morning Pancake

Serves: One

Ingredients:
½ cup Love Grown Foods Super Oats
2 Large Egg Whites
½ tsp Baking Powder
Cinnamon, to taste
Directions:
Preheat a griddle on medium-low heat. Combine ingredients into a bowl and mix well. Pour batter onto prepared griddle and allow to cook until bubbles start forming, flip and allow the other side to cook.
Add toppings and enjoy!

Today I added in some VegaSport Mocha Protein and topped with sliced banana and some Powerfuel Nuttzo .

Morganne added blueberries to the batter and topped with bananas and Powerfuel Nuttzo too.

What's your go-to breakfast?

Sunday in the Kitchen with a Little Food Prep

I am a huge fan of Sunday Food Prep and I can't believe it has taken me this long to write a post about food prepping. Between work, hitting the gym, training for a marathon and life, it's hard to find time to cook a healthy, balanced meal every night of the week. There is just never enough time . Food prep is one of the best ways that you can stay on track and eat healthy all week long. One of my favorite bloggers, The Lean Green Bean, has been a huge influence on why I food prep. On her blog, which you can read here, she talks about some of the ways on how to food prep. If you are a beginner, no worries, here are 5 tips from her blog to help you get started.

  • Start with a plan.
    • Make a list of everything you want to prep for the week.
  • Multi-task
    • The best way to ensure you get the most out of your allotted food prep time is to make sure you’re doing multiple things at once.
  • Don’t go overboard
    • Don’t prep more food than you and your family can finish by Thursday if you’re doing your prep on Sundays.
  • Double the recipe
    • If you’re making something like soup, burgers or casserole, consider doubling the recipe and putting half in the freezer for later.
  • Target your trouble times
    • Think about what time of the day you struggle most with healthy eating. Start with your trouble spots and then expand from there as you get more skilled and effective and food prep.
Here's a sneak peak into my Sunday Food Prep.

Mini Egg Quiches:
Simply pour egg whites into a muffin pan and top with your favorite veggies. Here I used mushrooms, fresh spinach, and tomatoes. Try lining the muffin tin with a slice of bacon (or turkey bacon) for added protein.

I also always make sure that I have fresh cut veggies, hard boiled eggs and protein bars on hand for quick snacks when I'm running errands or in between fitness glasses at the gym. My favorites include Picky Bars and GoMacro Bars.

Do you food prep? If so, we'd love for you to share your favorite food prep recipes with us to be featured on the blog.

Have a great week!!

Thirsty Thursday the SB Way with a Twist

Happy Thursday or #ThirstyThursday as you might already be thinking. Hang in there, the weekend is almost here.

Because it's #ThirstyThursday, I've decided to post some quick smoothie recipes compliments of Angela Simpson over at Eat Spin Run Repeat. Her blog is amazing and she posts the most incredible recipes. Stay tuned for an upcoming post on the top bloggers to follow (she's definitely on the list).

Fall is a great time of year for many reasons and not just because my birthday happens to be in a few weeks (2 weeks to be exact). I love that football has returned, the weather is much cooler for running, PSL is back at Starbucks, but most of all I love the flavors of Fall (especially pumpkin).

Try switching out your normal fruit smoothies with one these...

Oh Hey Kelly Rabil....What's in Your Bag?!?!

TGIF! Why can't every week be a four day week?!?! We have some exciting things to share this week on our instructor spotlight with my fellow Soul Body Ambassador, Kelly Rabil.

'Instructor Spotlight'

Kelly Rabil

Where do you teach and when?
I teach at Under Armour FX Studios on Monday and Wednesday at 12:15pm ... and Merritt Canton on Tuesday @ 9:30amThursday 5pm and Friday 5:45am

Favorite pre-workout meal/snack:I am not a big eater before an early morning workout but I love to chow down after. I love waffles and eggs in the morning. Mid day I love a good ol' PBJ sandwich and some fruit on the side.

Favorite recovery meal/snack:If I am running around between classes ... which always happens... and need a quick recovery snack I do enjoy my favorite organic fruit smoothie, SUJA or a Quest Bar (favorite flavor: cookies and cream)

You never leave home without_______: Lipgloss. I hate when my lips are dry.

What's in you bag?

Favorite workout gear, water bottle, etc.: A lulu headband. If its time for a big sweat session... that is a MUST!

Favorite barre move: No question, standing pretzel.

When were you first introduced to barre? What do you love most about it? I was first introduced when it first came to Merritt about three years ago. I was dying to try it out and I was asked if I wanted to take a training to teach it. I thought, why not? I LOVED IT and even more fell in love with Ann Marie and Stacy and immediately made it part of my life style. I love that I can take it anywhere, do it anywhere and most importantly feel strong, long, lean and beautiful when I am done.

Favorite quote: "Do what you love, Love what you do"

When you’re not at the barre, where may we find you? Possibly on a spin bike, running through the streets of Baltimore, or hanging with my teammates while we compete for the USA Women's National Lacrosse Team.
If all the work is done... you will find me hanging with my two best friends, Remy and my husband Paul. I am more then lucky to have them.

Fun Fact:One of my favorite hobbies is home decorating. Either decorating my home or learning how others made there home so beautiful.

Thank you Kelly for being an inspiration to all of us and for being a part of the SB Community as an ambassador.

Have a great weekend and we'd love to hear where you are taking Barre this weekend! Post picks and tag #SBCommunity and #SoulBodyBarre

Till next time...

Next Up....SB Co-Founder Stacey Vandiver for our Instructor Spotlight

Happy Friday to all of you fabulous ladies. As promised, I'm back to highlight another amazing woman who is also a Co-Founder of Soul Body.

"Instructor Spotlight"
Stacey Vandiver; Co-Founder of Soul Body

Where do you teach and when?
I teach at Embody Studio, Beachfit Baltimore, FX Studio and FX Well Corporate classes as well as working privately with clients.

Favorite pre-workout meal/snack:
Anything that will naturally fuel my body (nuts, seeds, fruit) I stay away from dairy and meat protein

Favorite recovery meal/snack:
Not super hungry after a big workout. Mainly I hydrate immediately after with water and lemon (my fav!)

What’s in your gym bag?
I carry cross trainers, extra leggings or capris and an extra workout bra. Also lots of hair ties, and my fav beauty products for post workout freshen up.  Love my rosewater wipes by Shoba, always smearing oils on my body and face. One of my favorite products is Liz Earle Superskin Concentratea wonderful blend of oils!

Favorite workout gear, water bottle, etc.:
I love wearing UA because not only are they our hometown gear but it’s a fabulous company! Their UA Studio line is really developing and I support them 110%!!
Also love the website Carbon 38…they support trainers and instructors and their collection of lines is fabulous!! Check out Splits58 Bianca Nior Jumpsuit and Alala’s Bondi Jumpsuit is perfect to throw on after your work out and run around town in!
I prefer to drink out of glass – my go to glass water bottle is LifeFactory.

I am a natural beauty products junkie so I am always trying different lines. One of my favorites is Liz Earle

Favorite barre move:
Love combining moves to work more than one part of the body…like lunges with bicep curls, or jumps at the barre to add a 30 second cardio surge! And my favorite toner for the seat is Bird on a Perch…come check it out!!

Favorite quote:
I do love Ziggy Marley’s quote “love is my religion” I always say, you get what you give…so give LOVE

When you’re not at the barre, where may we find you?
Driving around Baltimore! I have 4 kids and none of them drive…YET!

Share something fun/interesting about yourself:
I lived in Barcelona right after I graduated from Univ of MD for about a year and a half. I went not knowing the language and I met the most amazing people and learned to speak Spanish fluently! We are all still very close friends and the experience is something that will never leave my SOUL!

When were you first introduced to barre?
Ann Marie introduced me to it back in 2008! I was Power Pilates trained and loved the fusion of Pilates, yoga and traditional interval strength training all in one workout. The way that both Ann Marie and I exercise is a bit more athletic so we created our class to match more how the two of us workout. It is "mindfully-intense" ;)

Besides barre, what other fitness classes do you enjoy?
Always love a good spin class…that means fabulous music and a cool, motivating instructor!
I like to incorporate yoga into my workout routine. My fav local teacher is Maggins Kenney who also teaches our SB Barre class…she ROCKS!

I also like combining a bit of cardio into barre….a more one and done concept, getting my heart rate up at the same time of toning and strengthening!
But I truly LOVE being OUTSIDE and making my workout a fun sport…not just going to gyms. Love to play tennis, ski, bike and hike, run, etc.

Tips for those who are new to barre:
Introduce yourself to the instructor and let them know! A good instructor always has an eye out for those that may need extra cuing, etc
Be mindful in your movement. Pay attention to your form to get the most out of each exercise. I always say to my clients “better form, better results!”
If you like the class, keep going because you will only begin to understand the movement a little more and get deeper into each exercise. It never gets easier!!

As a mom of 4, what snacks do you prepare for your kids on the go?
I tell them to always think of eating whole foods first. Fruit, trail mix that I make, etc. Also a go-to snack in our house is peanut or almond butter sandwiches. It satisfies them and gives a little boost before off to the next activity. Another quick snack is a smoothie. They each have their favs and can make them themselves.

Who will be in our 'spotlight' next? Check back next Friday as we continue to chat with our instructors.
