Alright I'm Back! Sorry for the delay in getting another post up. Life has been crazy these past few days and I actually just finished moving my older sister from Toms River, New Jersey to Baltimore. So exciting!!! If I bring her to class, give her a nice Charm City welcome because she knows me and that's about it.
Anyhow...I hope everyone is liking the new choreo. I've gotten some great feedback. If you have feedback please share. We'd love to hear your thoughts (both good and bad).
If you are on social media I'm sure you've heard about this new thing called Free Baltimore Yoga. It's exactly that....FREE. They have an upcoming event this Wednesday and I'd love to see you there. This is a great way for me to connect with all of you outside of barre and practice yoga. Bring a friend and if you've never done yoga, give it a try and see what it can do for you. And it's FREE. LA Finfinger will be guiding the yoga followed by a guided meditation by Charm City PT. Oh and Gundalow Juice will be providing juices...Yum!!
Not only are there great physical benefits of practicing yoga, but it also helps to open the body for meditation and get in tune with your inner self. Yoga is a great way to create strength, awareness and harmony in both the mind and body. We constantly rush rush rush without taking the opportunity to slow down, and let go. Learn to let go of what you think you are meant to look like, feel like and really, most importantly, letting go of what you think. When you do this, you are able to take responsibility for yourself and begin to live more deeply from your own truth. So don't think about it, talk about it or analyze it, try just being it. Try letting go.
Follow Free Baltimore Yoga on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
See you all at the barre this week!

A New Way of Snacking
I don't know about you, but I'm a huge fan of trying new snacks and healthy foods whenever I get the chance. I recently received a shipment from Urthbox which was a huge success.
All you do is select a box size and choose from one month, three month, or six month subscriptions. You can choose either a Classic, Gluten-Free, Vegan or Diet box. They have such a variety of products to sample. The products are organic and non-GMO, gluten, vegan and diet options plus free shipping.
Another snack box that I love is Graze.
I love that there are so many options available for healthy snacking and the best part is that these snacks can be delivered right to your door or office.
Has anyone tried any other service like Graze or Urthbox? Let us know what you think. I'd love to try more!!

Here was my first box of goodies.
I think the Paleo bar has been my favorite so far. The Mendocino Tomato & Herb chips were also a huge hit.
Another snack box that I love is Graze.
"From pure fruit, to wholesome treats and dips & dippers – our huge variety (100 snacks with millions of graze box combinations) means there's always something different to try so you’ll never be left standing at the vending machine feeling glum again!"
Here is a quick look into one of the boxes I received. It had:
Lightly Toasted Pistachios
Beach Bum which was a mix of pineapple, chewy banana coins, and coconut flakes;
Garden of England which included soft apple pieces, strawberries and blackcurrants;
Vegetable Power filled with roasted soybeans, chickpeas and edamame.
I love that there are so many options available for healthy snacking and the best part is that these snacks can be delivered right to your door or office.

#TBT on the Blog
Our first ever #TBT on the blog. Going back to our Eat Pure Thrive Raw Workshop. Here are some of our favorite recipes.
CHIA SEED PUDDING WITH FRUIT
INGREDIENTS
1 cup almond or coconut milk
1 Tbsp chia seeds
1-2 Tbsp honey or pure maple syrup (depending on sweetness preference)
¼ tsp vanilla
¼ tsp cinnamon
choice of fruit…make it seasonal if possible!
PREPARATION
Mix ingredients all together. Let sit for at least 20-30 minutes but stir once or twice while it sits to avoid clumps. The longer it sits, the thicker it gets. Suggestion: if making it for breakfast mix all together night before and put in the refrigerator.
SERVES 2
KALE SALAD WITH CITRUS DRESSING
INGREDIENTS
For Salad
One-two bunches of kale
Whole lemon
Sea salt
For Dressing
2 medium oranges, peeled & sectioned
4 tsp diced ginger
1 Tbsp diced garlic
1 tsp sea salt
1/8 tsp cayenne
½ cup hemp seeds
½ cup good olive oil
¼ cup avocado oil
½ cup filtered water
PREPARATION
For salad: Tear kale in small pieces and squeeze juice of one lemon on kale. Sprinkle with sea salt to taste. Massage kale with hands until the kale starts to break down. At this point add other greens if you desire. Set aside.
For dressing: Place oranges, ginger, garlic, sea salt, & cayenne in a blender and process on high for 30-40 seconds. And seeds and oils and blend more. Chill dressing if time allows to let flavors combine.
Toss all together and add enjoy!
SERVES 2
BASIC TAHINI DRESSING
INGREDIENTS
2 Tbsp tahini
1 tsp apple cider vinegar
sea salt
hemp seeds
PREPARATION
Wisk together and add filtered water to desired consistency. You can play around with the amount of vinegar & water ratio depending on taste.
LIVE LASAGNA
With Basil Ricotta Cheese and Tomato Crème Sauce
INGREDIENTS
¼ cup fresh basil, tightly packed
3 ½ cups macadamia nuts
1 ¾ tsp. salt
1 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
4 tsp. plus ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
1 ½ cups filtered water
2 ½ cups tomatoes, blended
1 tsp. fresh oregano, minced
¼ cup plus 2 TB. Olive oil
6 TB. Filtered water
1 TB. Fresh rosemary
I large zucchini, thinly sliced lengthwise
1 large gold bar squash, thinly sliced lengthwise
1 bunch chard or rainbow chard, stems removed
4 large tomatoes, sliced
PREPARATION
1. Place ½ cup basil, 3 cups macadamia nuts. ½ teaspoon salt, ½ teaspoon black pepper, and 4 teaspoons apple cider vinegar in a food processor fitted with an S blade. Process for 20 seconds in a low speed, adding 1 ½ cups water as necessary slowly through the top. You might not need all the water. You want a lightly textured, ricotta like consistency with a semisweet and a basil taste. Overblending causes a pate consistency.
2. To get an accurate measurement, blend enough tomatoes until you reach the 2 cup line on your blender.
3. Add remaining half cup macadamia nuts, ¼ cup apple cider vinegar, ¼ cup olive oil, 1 teaspoon salt, remaining ½ half teaspoon black pepper, 6 tablespoons filtered water, and rosemary, and blend on high speed for 30 seconds until smooth.
4. Toss zucchini and gold bar squash strips in remaining 2 tablespoons olive oil and remaining ¼ teaspoon salt. Allow to marinate for I hour if possible. Dehydrate at 110 degrees for that one hour if you like softer ‘’ noodles.’’
5. Very lightly oil the bottom of a 13x9-inch pan. Place a layer of chard on the bottom. Add a layer of zucchini, then tomato, then ½ layer tomato sauce. Repeat and top with a final layer of zucchini.
6. Serve immediately or wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour to overnight so the layers will come together. The refrigerated version is easier to serve, and the flavor is enhanced. Garnish with some of the leftover ingredients such as julienned chard, whole or julienned basil leaves, fresh oregano, and tomato.
Yields one 13x9 inch pan
“Calamari” (Made with King Oyster Mushrooms)
INGREDIENTS
10-12 King Oyster Mushrooms
¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
2 tbl fresh squeezed lemon
Sea salt
1cup ground flaxseed
¼ cup minced mixed herbs (basil/thyme/oregano)
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
¼ tsp chili powder
freshly ground black pepper
PREPARATION
Cut stems off mushroom caps, slice stems crosswise into ¼ inch disks, with a small round cutter – cut circle out of center of each disk leaving a ring. Caps and center circle set aside for another use.
Toss Rings into olive oil/lemon juice and generous pinch of sea salt – marinate for 30 minutes.
In a large bowl, combine the flax seed, herbs, cayenne, chili powder, generous pinch of salt and pepper to taste.
Toss mushroom in breading and coat evenly.
Transfer to a mesh dehydrator tray and dehydrate for 2-3 hours until warm and slightly crispy.
Cocktail Sauce
INGREDIENTS
3 cups chopped tomatoes
1cup sun dried tomatoes (soaked for an hour in warm water)
¼ cup grated fresh horseradish
2 small shallots, peeled and chopped
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
2 tsp red chili pepper flakes
1 tsp salt
PREPARATION
In a high speed blender blend all ingredients at low spin to chop and combine. Can also use food processor. The mixture should retain form and not be completely smooth.
We would love to get your feedback on the recipes and see your pictures on social media. Make sure you post on the SB Community Page on Facebook and tag us on Instagram.

Summer the SoulBody Way
This summer has been flying by with all of the exciting things that have been going on in the SB community and in Baltimore. This is such a great time of year to live in the city and take part in some great summer events. We hope that all of you are having as much fun as we are!!!
It's hard to believe it has already been two weeks since we completed SB Body Barre training at Club Fitness in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. We had a great group of ladies and we are excited to see our program expand to new locations. You can view the next group of training workshops here.
If you all are heading to the beach be sure to check out this awesome juice bar that Ann Marie and Stacey discovered while in Delaware. It's called JuiceBox and has one heck of a menu. They even serve up Gluten Free and Vegan options as well as have a full espresso bar with Zeke's coffee. Check it out here. They are located at 3 Atlantic Ave Ocean View, DE 19970.
For those of you who head to the Baltimore Farmer's Market on Sunday's, make sure you stop by Community Produce for some smoothies and depending on how your Saturday went maybe some Wheatgrass to detox. Wheatgrass juice is an effective healer because it contains all minerals known to man, and vitamins A, B-complex, C, E, l and K. It is extremely rich in protein, and contains 17 amino acids, the building blocks of protein. Because it contains crude chlorophyll, it is able to neutralize toxins in the body. Read more about the many other benefits of wheatgrass here. You can find wheatgrass at many of the local juice bars including Corner Juice Bar on the corner of S. Montford and Fleet in Canton.

Oh and has anyone tried this place?...Sexy Vegie. So many healthy options...YUM!!
Hopefully some of you were able to tackle ArtScape this weekend despite the heat. Did anyone find any good (healthy) places to eat? My friend and enjoyed this amazing plate of veggies and hummus from Clementine. We also ordered a Basil Lime Elixer which was so refreshing.
Alright....get out there, have fun, enjoy summer and most importantly....
Until next time...

Mid-Week Pick Me Up...Coffee and a Shake
We all love our coffee and morning smoothie, but have you ever thought about combining the two? One of my favorite things to do with leftover coffee from the morning is pour it into an ice cube tray and freeze. This way when I want an extra boost, I can simply toss a few in my smoothie.
My fellow Gundalow Juice Ambassador, Hilary Phelps over at Genuine Joy makes this delicious Coffee Smoothie. This definitely makes for a great way to start your Hump Day :)
Coffee Smoothie
1 Cup Almond Milk
1 Banana
1 Heaping Tablespoon Almond Butter
1-2 Tablespoons of Cacao or Cocoa Powder
3-4 Coffee Ice Cubes
Optional Add-ins: Honey, Agave or Stevia, Spinach, Chocolate or Vanilla Protein Powder (I like Vega One Vanilla Chai)
Blend and Enjoy!

Taking Time to Recover and A New Move
Happy Hump Day! I hope everyone is having a great week and getting into the swing of things after a long weekend. Don't forget the SB Barre contest is going until July 17th. You can get all the contest details here.
One thing I've failed to touch on is stretching and recovery. I know we are all pressed for time, but there are some simple things that you can begin to incorporate into your daily routine. Yes...barre will help prevent injuries from happening, but that doesn't mean you can avoid stretching all together.
Here are 7 elements that will get you on the right path to making sure you are taking care of your yourself.
1. Sleep: the most important time to recovery in that it provides mental health, hormonal balance and muscle recovery
2. Hydration: Water is the best way to hydrate. Try adding lemons, limes or fruit.
3. Nutrition: Everything you eat has the ability to help heal or hurt your body. Eating clean and balanced meals in moderation will help you remain healthy and increase performance.
4. Posture: Find a chair that correct and if you struggle to sit upright use a foam roller or ball in your back to help force good posture.
6. Self-Myofascial Release: Tight muscles and trigger points sometimes need assistance to return to healthy normal tissue. Try foam rolling before and after your workout. I've also come to love massages and Massage Envy in Federal Hill has some great therapist that can help target trouble areas.
7. Heat, Ice, and Compression: Use these techniques for recovering from injuries or a very stressful training or racing experience.
Here's a great new move to try for stretching your feet and avoiding really tight calf muscles which we know we get from all of the work at the barre. This is something you can do while watching TV, prepping dinner, brushing your teeth, etc. Our feet are our foundation and support everything we do, so please give them some love!!
Don’t ignore your body until it becomes too late and you’re forced to take unnecessary time off due to injury, burnout, or worse. We need YOU at the barre!!
Have a great week and don't forget to submit your photos!

Another reason to LOVE Barre and our first GIVEAWAY
We all know that summer is a super busy time for all of us. Just because you can't make to an SB Barre class doesn't mean you have to forget your workout all together. There are plenty of ways in which you can incorporate barre while at home, on vacation, or on the road which is why we love barre and why you should too!!
Barre workouts are excuse proof meaning they do not require big movements. They can be done almost anywhere, including in a small space with minimal props. As long as you have a support, like a chair or kitchen counter (or a tree or pillar by the pool), you're good to go.
They will help you be lean and well rounded due the isometric movements which help create endurance and balance.
Looking for flexibility? Barre helps to strengthen the muscles from the tiny, isometric movements which will gives them a better range of motion, making you more flexible and less prone to injury.
Keep any eye out for some of these moves at the Barre in the coming weeks as the SB instructors bring you the latest SB Choreo!!!
All you have to do is post a picture of you doing your favorite barre move on social media (Facebook, Instagram) with the hashtag #sbbarrecontest. Get creative and have fun. You have until July 17th to post your pictures so you have plenty of time. The winner will receive a FREE SoulBody tank and the opportunity to bring a non-member to one of the studios for a FREE SB Barre or Body Barre class plus post workout Gundalow Juice. Pretty sweet deal...yes?!?!
Good luck!!

These small movements may not look like much, but will develop big results.

Hello July and What We Have Cookin'
Hello July!! I'm not really sure where exactly June went, but all I know is that it's a new month and this a perfect time to start fresh. Oh and the new SB Barre and Body Barre choreo comes out today making this hump day even better :)
So forget about June and focus on what's to come. Where are you with your goals? What is there to accomplish in July? What progress have you made since you started tracking? What goals do you have for your barre class and how can you better yourself to see change?
Because July 4th is coming up and I'm sure you all are headed out to a party or maybe even hosting a party, I wanted to share a recent recipe that I discovered from Happy WifeStyle that is definitely one to try. You can also use smaller mushrooms and make this more of an appetizer or add chicken for more of an entree. Don't worry this is even Paleo and Whole30 approved! You can get more of her recipes here.
Spinach & Artichoke Stuffed Portobello Mushrooms
1 16oz. package frozen spinach, thawed and drained (I found organic at Sprouts!)
2 cans of quartered artichoke hearts, drained and roughly chopped
| Recipe courtesy of: Happy WifeStyle |
1 cup roasted and unsalted cashews
3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon dried basil
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
4 portobello mushroom caps, cleaned and stems removed
course sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees
- Combine the spinach and artichokes along with a sprinkle of sea salt in a large saucepan and set over medium heat to heat through.
- Place the cashews in a food processor (I used my Vitamix) and grind until they have broken down into a texture similar to a coarse meal. Then add the olive oil, garlic and onion powders, basil, cayenne pepper, and salt and pepper and puree until smooth.
- Add the cashew mixture to the saucepan with the spinach mixture and mix well. Reduce the heat to low and heat briefly to warm through. Fill the portobello mushroom caps with the filling. Place the mushroom caps on a rimmed baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes.
ENJOY!!!
What are you cooking up for the holiday?
Share your healthy, go to recipes with us!!
In good health,
Emily
